Nestled within the rich tapestry of history, Iznik - once known as Nicaea - boasts a remarkable collection of historical structures. Among these, the Green Mosque (or Yeşil Cami) stands out not just for its architectural beauty but also as a cherished symbol of the city. The mosque’s name is derived from the striking hues of the ceramic tiles that adorn its solitary minaret, casting a vibrant charm that captures the essence of Iznik's storied past. Stepping into this enchanting space invites you to discover the layers of history and artistry that have defined this timeless location.

The construction of the Green Mosque was started by the Grand Vizier Çandarlı Kara Halil Hayreddin Pasha and finished by Ali Pasha, his son and successor as the Grand Vizier. From the inscription on the building, it is known that the main architect was Haci bin Musa, and the mosque was built between 1378 and 1391.

The Green Mosque consists of a three-arcade portico and one prayer hall, in which a colonnade has been used to separate the women's section. The prayer hall is covered by a dome with a diameter of about 10.5 meters. A smaller dome is located above the women's section.

The interior of the mosque is lined in its lower part with slabs of grey marble. The niche indicating the direction of Mecca, i.e. the mihrab, is surrounded by an intricately carved frame with the so-called Mocárabe motif resembling dripstones in the form of stalactites.

The exterior of the mosque building is clad with hewn stone blocks. In the northwestern corner stands a single minaret, beautifully decorated with tiles with a dominant green shade. The decorative pattern also includes yellow and purple tiles.

During the Turkish-Greek war in 1922, the mosque was seriously damaged. Renovations were carried out only in the years 1956-1969, at the request of the General Board of Religious Foundations.

Getting there:

The Green Mosque is located on the eastern side of Iznik, on Yeşil Cami Geçidi Street. In its vicinity stands another historical mosque, Şeyh Kudbuddin, as well as Nilufer Hatun İmareti, a historical building of a soup kitchen built by Sultan Murad I for his mother Nilufer Hatun. It currently houses the city museum. A little further to the east stands the Lefke Gate, which is part of the fortifications of Iznik.
